If you’re in the market for car parts, you’re probably already overwhelmed by people telling you the type of parts you need. Two of the most recommended vehicle parts are OEM parts and “industry standard” parts, but what’s the difference?
While many people think that parts are parts and near enough is good enough, there is a big difference between these two types of parts. It’s worth educating yourself on what exactly they are before making any purchasing decisions.
Aftermarket or Industry Standard Parts
Aftermarket parts are made by companies other than the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and are usually fitted as replacements after the car has come out of the factory.
Industry standard parts are not the same thing as OEM and can be problematic to install in some cases. While they may look the same and in some cases perform the same, there are risks that come with using industry standard parts.
Quality is a concern for industry standard parts. While they are typically tested and made to certain standards of quality, industry standard parts are not tested in the same way as OEM parts; an integral part of your specific vehicle. This means they may not fit as well, perform as well, or be able to guarantee the same safety standards as OEM parts.
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) refers to parts that have been assembled and installed during the construction of a new vehicle. Authentic OEM parts are designed specifically for particular car models and each OEM part has been designed and tested by your vehicle’s manufacturer to fulfil a particular function in your car. Each OEM part has faced rigorous testing, promoting safety and reliability when you’re on the road.
OEM parts are recommended by all leading manufacturers. Selecting OEM parts for your vehicle is the simplest way to ensure your car is operating as intended, with parts selected, tested and approved by your manufacturer.
